OC432.)FRENCH MODEL 1874 GRAS BAYONET: beautiful example all around. The model 74 Gras bayonet is arguably one of the best-looking European edged weapons ever produced there is no doubt. 26" long overall with immaculate natural steel blade. Super-clean with only minor blemishing here and there and some light in/out wear from scabbard action. Blade spine is etched with script lettering being 'Ste. Etienne' French arsenal and date 'Mai 1879'. Intact, dark hardwood grip, no cracks nor any chips....just shows a few insignificant creases to wood. Brass pommel and smoothly functioning spring button for bayonet lug channel. Natural steel cross-guard with multiple armory and inspector's stamps. Bayonet is serial numbered '79939' which matches that on the scabbard throat. Typically these are found to be mis-matched and rarely found with matching numbers. Blade ricasso is die-struck too with inspector's codes. Lovely gun metal blue finished steel scabbard with finish all but intact; mild oxidation browning here and there. No dents nor any creases.
