OC3587.)BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOT'S WING: given the king's crown it's tough to say with complete certainty whether this gem is WWI or WWII era. I would strongly suggest that it's World War One since it radiates that period quality (stunning bullion wire workmanship) and lots of attractive age. I do believe that the WWII period RAF wing was typically sewn on, this one is pin-back (much like a US Dallas wing of the WWI period). 3 1/2" wide on cut-to-shape black wool. Impeccably hand embroidered with now toned gold bullion wire details. Padded and sculpted, three-dimensional. Note that the crown motif is in maroon velvet and is adorned with colorful thread details for jewels. Just a stunning piece of workmanship. Ask for more up closed and detailed photos. Reverse has silver alloy clasp with hinged pin-back. Marked to the premiere Canadian maker 'Gaunt-Montreal' and 'Made in England'. Has the proper WWI period thin black tissue paper backing which is mildly worn and aged. Note too that the initials on the front are 'RAF' for Royal Air Force and that this pilot -- if he was indeed Canadian -- flew for the RAF in WWI otherwise this wing would be adorned with CAC for the Canadian Aviation Corps circa 1917. Totally superb and very desirable. EXC++++
Just recently examined by an expert on WWI aviation insignia and deemed to be very genuine.
