G130.)HJ KNIFE WITH CLEAR, LUCITE GRIPS: over the years I have seen several of these and all of them, like this one, are genuine period. Johnson speculated years ago that these examples with Lucite grips were produced immediately post-war for the GI souvenir market. Maybe likely? Others have speculated that these were modified by the GI's themselves, but if so, why so many of them out there. No one knows. This one -- like the others -- radiates age and originality. Natural steel blade is shows some period sharpening to the edge...blade is dark gray with toning. Double-marked to maker 'HARTKOPF, SOLINGEN' with twin devil logos. Marked on the ricasso with RZM logo and maker's code 'M7/40'. These clear lucite grips were perfectly molded to fit snugly, not awkward and 'homemade' . They are flawless and they were made specifically for an HJ knife. Genuine glass enameled HJ diamond inset and threaded screws with nuts. Silver finish on both pommel and on cross-guard are worn here and there from use. Black finished steel scabbard is mostly brown-oxidized and shows wear and age. Brown leather hanger is intact -- soft and supple -- but for grip strap which is missing one tip. Has its snap button. Not perfect by any means but not quite a relic if you follow me.
