G164.)GERMAN ARMY M40 SINGLE DECAL STEEL HELMET: in a familiar state of poor preservation....do doubt left in a barn while resting on its crown for years. The leather liner is completely missing however the zinc liner band is still present. Interior of shell of shell's skirt shows a period brush-stroked application while the outside has a wartime, rough and textured surface -- light deflecting -- much like a sawdust mixture. Single Wehrmacht eagle decal is still present although quite worn as shown. On the crown is a 2" long area where the camouflage application chipped away and this reveals the original smooth surface of the shell although quite brown oxidized. Some vertical streaks to one side of shell. Inside still has the completely intact liner band -- tight and un-fooled with -- and the brown woolen felt padding remains intact. Interior of shell basin is rusted brown and needs to be cleaned up. Underside of shirt is die-struck with maker's code and size 'SE64'. Production code on the rear skirt is difficult to discern but is it '5668'. Chin strap, while aged and really convincing, is an old copy that we added. No doubt easily restored and will look great when cleaned up, not a very challenging project.
