G173.)CASED 1914 AUSTRIAN RED CROSS BREAST BADGE: 1st Class Service Cross for the World War One Austrian Roteskreuz. A spectacular breast badge, large and imposing, 48x55mm in dimensions. Slightly vaulted and just radiating quality glass enameled workmanship. Fine silver base with cloisonne enamel detailed arms, the type of glass enameling that has an internal, geometric pattern to it. Separately applied glass enameled device in center, green glass enameled wreath. Lettering in central boss is the Austrian Red Cross latin motto 'Patriae ae Humanitati' (For Country and Humankind). Reverse has silver plate in the center covering the internal rivets; two elaborate and heavy mounting hooks. Engraved on the back with date '1914' and the year that the Austrian Red Cross was founded '1864'. Prongs are marked with letter 'A' for the Vienna Mint and the characteristic Dianakopf logo and what appears to be the maker 'Rothe'. Comes in 3" square case with awkwardly functioning spring button catch at front. Hinge on the back was damaged and has a brown paper repair. Silver printed cover on case with Austrian Red Cross motto and the letters 'K.D.' (I believe this is for Kriegsdienste or War Service). Inside of case has an ivory shade velvet insert that's deeply recessed to accommodate cross's elaborate mounting arrangement on the back. Upper inside is lined with padded silk and is maker marked to Viennese jeweler 'G.A.SCHNEID, WIEN'. EXC++++
